BrandonMy Fileserver
Ever since I got 2 used 200GB IDE hard drives last year I've wanted to make a RAID 1 server to back up data on. So today I started on my way, with a Pentium III 533EB (Its like 18watts and is powerful enough to play a DVD, so I figured it'd be enough). My inital setup was 128MB RAM and the 2 drives, and it failed. So I upped the ram and got it all set and realized that my OS drive couldn't be part of the RAID array. So I ended like this: 2x200GB Maxtor HDD (in RAID 1),2GB Seagate (OS), and 320MB RAM(256 would probably be enough). I chose FreeNAS as the OS because 1.I've never used it and I like to experiment, and 2.because it's resource friendly. Setting up my software RAID array was not hard but overly complicated and took a lot of clicks. The setting it up as a SMB and FTP server was simple. I've copied 8GB of files and the CPU usage didn't pass 85% and RAM stayed under 15%, so I think the hardware is well suited. So If you have a spare machine and a decent hdd laying around get FreeNAS and try it out, there is so many different type of file server freenas can be, I'm blown away.
