Brandon | No more MacbookLast time I needed to update my web-site I got fed up with MacOS and it's lack of a good FTP client. And in general I think Linux is a better OS. So I've been considering selling my macbook, but I hate EBay, so it would have to be a local sale.
This week end at the family XMas gathering I was showing a tech savy relative a linux distro in virtualbox and he mentioned he kind of would like a mac to mess with and get to know the UI.
Well I showed him everything and within a few days he'll be handing me $800 and I'll had him the macbook. I have to use this damn EEE until then, and as on right now my wrist hurts from the tiny screen.
Any recommendations on what netbook I should get for linux (new about $200-$300) or should I new a replacement mobo for an IBM T42 I have? | 2009-12-22 | 8:51 PM |
Todd | Re:No more MacbookI thought you wanted to erase the OS X partition and just put Ubuntu or something on the entire disk?
As far as netbooks, I have an Acer Aspire One which works great although for lots of multimedia things it begins to lag. It can do things like watch movies and play FPSes but it's a nice comparison to a decent notebook. It would definitely run Ubuntu fairly well (but it doesn't have a DVD-ROM).
As far as a good notebook goes, I'd get a Fujitsu Lifebook E Series. It's pretty awesome and very comparable to a desktop (nice big screen, NVidia GeForce gfx card, customizable HDD and RAM, web cam, accelerometers, etc.). I have one and it's awesome. They're not cheap but the used ones are still great. They are pretty reliable like the ThinkPads.
I also have an S Series Lifebook, and to tell you how reliable they are, I accidentally left it on in my backpack and it sat in my backpack for 4 hours cooking to the point that the entire pack was warm and the laptop itself was burning hot. It still runs perfectly with no damage! lol I could find you one on eBay for like $200. Those are typically Centrinos though. The Core 2 Duos are more. | 2009-12-22 | 11:59 PM |
Brandon | Re:No more Macbook
(new about $200-$300)
That's my biggest factor. So a new laptop is just about out of the question. I mean I might go up to about $400 depending on the deal.
As far as the Acer Aspire One it's like any other netbook hardware wise, I was just curious as to wether the wifi is supported out of the box in most linux distros?
I do have an old Thinkpad T42 and the cost of a new mobo+battery+hdd is only like $200, I'd rather do that than to buy another notebook on ebay, but I'm looking for input as far as wether I should get a new netbook or to repair the IBM, the flaws with the IBM would be it's older, used, and uses IDE Hard drives, but it has a bigger screen, more accessories, a bigger hdd, and it'd be new.
As of right now, I'm kind of looking at this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4843641&body=MAIN $300 with bluetooth,wifi,160gb hdd,1gb ram and neon color :P | 2009-12-23 | 10:47 AM |
Todd | Re:No more MacbookBut like I said, why don't you just erase the Mac OS partition and install Linux on the entire hard drive? | 2009-12-24 | 2:37 PM |
Brandon | Re:No more MacbookI already sold it, and the fan would basically always be on, the speakers didn't work, it wasn't ideal. | 2009-12-24 | 2:46 PM |
Todd | Re:No more MacbookYou're not talking about the one you got just last year, are you? I'm not harping on Apple when I say this, but I guess the Macbooks aren't as great in the long run if hardware start failing. | 2009-12-24 | 8:01 PM |
Brandon | Re:No more MacbookIt's probably the best hardware I've ever used. All of the above is what happens with Linux, under Windows or Mac OS it's fine. | 2009-12-24 | 8:40 PM |
Todd | Re:No more MacbookOh. Why would it happen under Linux? It seems like wireless would be the only problem but even then they got better with it. Did you ever try Debian 5? It's pretty nice and very compatible as long as you have all the hardware you need when installing. Configuring it with new hardware later on is a hassle. I ordered a cheap $100 Chinese netbook and I'm going to load Puppy or DSL on it. I would try Debian but I'm afraid GNOME will slow it down since it has an ARM 300 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, and 2 GB flash memory. | 2009-12-24 | 10:55 PM |
Brandon | Re:No more MacbookI had all those issues with Ubuntu and they are known issues, look on the community wiki. I assumed that if Ubuntu, the most popular distribution wouldn't work, then chances are less popular once wouldn't either.
On your netbook good luck running anything, my old Palm Lifedrive has more CPU power than that :P | 2009-12-25 | 7:43 AM |
Todd | Re:No more Macbooklol So does my Tungsten C. But I'm sure Puppy would run fine. Heck I can even load Debian just as a CLI and build a lightweight WM. I just hope Wifi will work with it. Otherwise I'm stuck using Windblows CE, so it's not even like I would be able to run any of my applications. | 2009-12-25 | 10:42 AM |
Brandon | Re:No more MacbookYou realize there is no ARM port of DSL or Puppy? So debian, ubuntu,or bsd are your real choices. | 2009-12-25 | 11:00 AM |
Todd | Re:No more MacbookReally? Then I'll just install Debian without a GUI and see if I can get PicoGUI installed. | 2009-12-25 | 3:11 PM |
Brandon | Re:No more MacbookYeah, I'd like an ARM machine someday, but I'D need better specs than what I can find so far. | 2009-12-25 | 9:35 PM |
Todd | Re:No more MacbookYeah but I bought it just for the hell of it. If I can get Debian and GNOME installed along with getting the wifi to work, I'll be in business. I think GNOME would run because I had a P2 that I loaded Kubuntu on which ran well but it took a little while to boot up since KDE is slow as hell. The specs were the same except it was a different CPU architecture than this netbook. | 2009-12-26 | 11:48 AM |
