| Amiga A500I found 2 Amigas on eBaY for $100.
I couldn't do anything with them since it had no cables. So Dad brought 1 PSU converter with the square plug. Then we hooked it up to the tv. By now
All I know is that it has Kickstart 1.3 on it. We've asked for copies of games and WorkBench 1.3. We also brought a tank mouse and 2 Amiga520 RF Modulators, then we might but a RF-2-AV converter so I get the crisp picture
Anyone know where WB3.1 might be on the net, Not in an ADF file? :) | 2009-08-13 | 6:43 PM |

| Re:Amiga A500Not there. I've look at heaps of pages, only adf files :( Does anyone know if WB3.1 (Workbench 3.1 would work on KS1.3 (Kickstart 1.3)? It would suck if i had to change the ROM around  | 2009-08-14 | 10:46 AM |
pharoah | Re:Amiga A500Just don't base your next GUI on it. Workbench is possibly the ugliest desktop environment I have ever seen. | 2009-08-14 | 10:30 PM |

Brandon | Re:Amiga A500Are you saying that:
is better than:

I don't think so! | 2009-08-15 | 8:02 AM |
| Re:Amiga A500What has color? What could run a TV network? I'm really talking about WB3.1 aswell | 2009-08-15 | 8:31 AM |
ksr | Re:Amiga A500It may be in colour but IMO Apple have made better use of what they have. WB just seems messy to me. Why do parts of the screen seem to be in a different resolution to other parts (the dotty window, and the title bar text)? | 2009-08-15 | 9:04 AM |
Todd | Re:Amiga A500WorkBench seems kind of "blocky" like a GUI running in SCREEN 13. | 2009-08-15 | 9:16 AM |
SonicBrit | Re:Amiga A500The thing you have to remember is it had to run on a tv so yes it looks blocky because of that.
You should look at the history of Amiga, it was quite a revolutionary machine for its time, as is the Apple Mac.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workbench_(AmigaOS)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_history
Orginally Mac didn't have color to begin with, the Amiga did, the original Mac also didnt have multi-tasking to begin with, the Amiga did.
They were both designed by different people meeting different goals, and I think both merit including in the realm of what computing has become. | 2009-08-15 | 4:19 PM |
Brandon | Re:Amiga A500Its true that the Amiga was revolutionary, but from a modern standpoint, at least in my opinion MacOS is easier to look at and therefore is a better GUI. | 2009-08-15 | 5:05 PM |
pharoah | Re:Amiga A500Yeah I like the Amiga. I just think Workbench was a very poorly designed GUI. It had a GUI, because anything like the Amiga would almost have to. But they put no thought into how having things like variable-sized icons and orange and blue would make it look. The machine had a 64 and 4096 color mode -- why does it look uglier than Windows 1?
Also, GEOS ran on a TV. GEOS looked pretty decent. Even TOS, which suffered from a very strange aspect ratio, arguably looked better.
Still, you couldn't really beat the amiga itself for graphical power. They just didn't make good use of it with the UI. | 2009-08-15 | 7:04 PM |
| Re:Amiga A500Which Workbench are we talking about? 1, 1.2 1.3 2, 3.1 or 4? | 2009-08-15 | 7:40 PM |
Brandon | Re:Amiga A500The screenshots are of MacOS 1.1 and WB 1, both are of the same age. What version of WB is your fav, Jason? | 2009-08-15 | 9:57 PM |
SonicBrit | Re:Amiga A500I agree the Amiga GUI has not aged well, and yes I do like GEM (Atari) and GEOS (PC/C64) for different OS looks and feel, as it is I like most GUI's I try to be GUI agnostic :P | 2009-08-16 | 10:30 PM |
| Re:Amiga A500A monochrome gui would be really sweet. But not black on white like the macos, but white on black for ease on the eyes if working for long period of time. And monochrome graphics are really fast and take up less memory so you can store many pages in ram and video memory. This gives me an idea... | 2009-08-17 | 10:13 PM |
