Let me tell you about a little bit of software I find really useful: TiddlyWiki (http://www.tiddlywiki.com/). I've been looking at personal wikis but they all seemed too bloated, requiring a local server or running as an application. TiddlyWiki is really lightweight and the whole wiki is stored in a single html file. I use it as an active desktop object in XP and it works very well: I've placed my desktop icons in a auto-hidden toolbar: In general I think that the active desktop functionality is very underrated, especially since the proliferation of AJAX and DHTML.

This looks neat! I was taking a look at the site. I can't find a demo since the "example sites" aren't very navigable. Do you have it on your website or something? I'd like to get a look at it and try out the AJAX-y stuff. ;)

The best thing to do is download it and have a play - you're only downloading a single html file and it's there ready to use. My copy is in a local folder and you can apparently sync it with other copies held on USB drives. btw, I'm using this theme: http://tiddlythemes.com/empties/Monochrome.html

Yeah, TiddlyWiki is pretty cool. I'm surprised that active desktop is still around though, thought they took that out after '98 :).

I think in 98 active desktop probably seemed a bit pointless, but now I can see it being really productive - it's actually one of my favourite features of Windows. If you have a local PHP server (wampserver or something) you could make a really cool interactive desktop. The only problem of course is that it's IE under the hood :P

This is like ActiveDesktop for Mac, as far as what forums say: http://www.stupidfish23.com/desktopmagik/

Speaking of active desktop, did you know you can watch movies and videos on your desktop with VLC?

BrandonRe:TiddlyWiki
Nope, but I do love VLC, its nice to be able to watch DVDs without codecs :)
