BrandonMy Big Project
My major project will a Linux distro. Modern distro's are either bloated (Ubuntu, KDE, GNOME), too small (DSL,Puppy,TinyCore) or not very user friendly. So for my gaols, I want package compatibility with a large distro, Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware? I am thinking FVWM95, but idk, any ideas?

One thing that's a big decider for any Linux user is hardware compatibility. It might be tough to do but you could write code to monitor certain device ports on the machine and detect hardware and correctly mount it or setup the proper drivers for the device.

normaly such functionality exist already on more "eprouved" distribution like Mandriva or Suse... I never had any hardware problem with these distributions. everything was detected and configured automatically, including the webcam or my asus wifi dongle

What is the purpose of the distro? Ubuntu and DSL both have their uses.

Desktop usage. But with no bloat, and ease of use. Its really hard to find a good balance.

WMs like FVWM95 and IceWM are made in C++ so you could carve out unwanted blocks of code and recompile them for your distro.

That's the way to go, super customize a kernel and WM. I want a solid Desktop Environment, that's something most distros are lacking in.

I think it's also because most distros are developed by small groups of people who only see certain things as important in a desktop. While one distro team thinks it's important to have a "start" button, others believe it's important to have an icon bar.
