Brandon | OSes SuckI wish I could find a good OS. I mean one where the base system can run on a 486 with 16MB RAM. Obviously, Firefox won't run on that config, but the desktop, file manager, simple text editor, calculator, image viewer, maybe a text html browser, task manager, all at the same time.
I know it seems crazy, but Win3.1 could do it(I think), and probably other old OSes.
How much ram does a basic command line linux use? Maybe with a custom desktop and apps set, Linux could be made to work? | 2009-03-22 | 5:18 PM |
trolly | Re:OSes Suckwin 3.1 is not an OS but only a GUI for dos

Seriously. IMO it was their best release. It's got USB support and everything. | 2009-03-22 | 6:51 PM |
Brandon | Re:OSes SuckWin98 on 486 with 16MB RAM? That would be horrible. | 2009-03-22 | 7:08 PM |
ksr | Re:OSes SuckWell with those specs I don't think anything other than DOS is going to run very nicely. | 2009-03-22 | 7:10 PM |

SonicBrit | Re:OSes SuckAs sad as it is, I grew up with dos, then later moved to windows (as thats what we used at school). I had os2 3 installed for a bit, before moving onto windows 95, which for the most part was stable never had many (like maybe 3) bsods, did have the registry go bad a couple of times though.
I had windows 95a running on a 386 sx 16, with 16mb's of RAM, which whilst it took 2 minutes to boot up (which I guess given todays os's its not that bad), it was usable even had IE 3 installed and it worked well.
So Brandon corrupt that poor 486, install windows 95, it'll never be the same ;) | 2009-03-22 | 7:52 PM |
Todd | Re:OSes SuckWindows 3.1 will run for sure but because of lack of hardware support thereof, it's kind of like having a Helen Keller computer, unless you have drivers to run in DOS or Windows 3.1. ;)
Windows NT is good since it's 32-bit and should handle a lot of those things very nicely. Plus Nathan over at ToastyTech got it to run Firefox: http://toastytech.com/guis/ff2nt351.png B)
Plus if all fails, you could make a GUI that'll run under it. :) That's another favorite motto of mine: "If it doesn't work, MAKE one that does!" | 2009-03-22 | 8:22 PM |
Brandon | Re:OSes SuckOh did I mention, that it should be freeware. | 2009-03-22 | 8:26 PM |
SonicBrit | Re:OSes SuckWow I'm impressed they where able to run flash video on that, nt 3.51 is quite an interesting os, it looks windows 3.1 but can run windows 95 apps, I might have to dig out my old cd's for it | 2009-03-22 | 8:28 PM |
aguma | Re:OSes SuckVetusware isn't suspended anymore, you can try OS/2 if you haven't yet. | 2009-03-22 | 9:22 PM |
