BrandonMy Distro Needs a Name?
Any ideas for the name to my new Distro? Remember its goals: Work on: 400-500Mhz System 128MB RAM 2GB HDD with ~500MB free I need a name before I can make a website or anything :)

"Old School Linux"? "Avenging Linux"? (avenging for old PCs) Or "Phoenix Linux"? (since the Phoenix rises from the ashes) Or since it's made for small requirements, how about "RadLinux" (short for Radical Linux)? I was thinking of a name to mean it's either for older PCs or that it has very few requirements.

Phoenix Linux seems cool. But the name is somewhat used: * Phoenix (compiler framework), a framework from Microsoft * Phoenix Object Basic, a software-based objective programming language * Phoenix (computer), an IBM mainframe at Cambridge University * Phoenix Technologies, a BIOS manufacturer * Mozilla Firefox, a web browser that was previously known as Phoenix * Aviary (application suite), a web-based image editor So, I'd like to look at other options. One good thing is it gave us a mascot.

At least we can have the bird as the logo. I think it'd be a good name for it since the older PCs that have been left in the dust can now rise again with our Linux distro. :D

I think the Phoenix name is good without Linux, because it has nix on the end?? Some suggestions You might want to look at older kernels, or possibly stripping a kernel image of irrelevant modules. Also recompile the kernel module specifically for k6, k62 and pentium 1 & 2, that way you should have better performance, (Its possible you might want to look into recompiling X and alike, but I understand how much work that involves) Also if you do look into recompiling checkout Intel's C Compiler, it is known to produce pretty speedy code (something like 10% faster then gcc)

I don't know, Its seems like a good idea, I just don't know how to do anything like that.

I can toy around with the kernel during spring break. I thought the Intel C compiler is shareware. Anyway I wonder if it'll port easily from GCC.

It is: http://www.intel.com/cd/software/products/asmo-na/eng/download/locations/index.htm I think I might stick with the default kernel. I don't want to cut anything out, just because its main purpose is the low end, doesn't mean that it will not also be made for newer machines.

That's true. Plus there could be compilation issues between the standard libraries in GCC and Intel C++.
