BrandonDell Sucks
I can't really say anything about pre-p3 dells, because I've never used one. There p3 desktops were pretty decent, but honestly their P4s suck ass. I have 3 that are my own and 2 have bad mobos, and 1 is one should be dead in a year or too. My Dad bought a Dell fully loaded with all-in-one printer, 20" monitor, 3-4year warranty, the works, for approx $3000 in '06, and just last night it started on its path to hell! The system gets part way through BIOS loading and freezes with consistent beeps similar to if you hold a keyboard key down(ps: i unplugged the keyboard, its not the issue). Dell systems also sell dirt cheap on ebay because everyone has them, and they don't last. BUY GATEWAY!

Its funny because here in the office we have some xeon server boxes which work fine, (we run vmware esx on them). But I've heard horror stories especially in my last job, the motherboard nics always seemed to die. As it is we build our workstations now which is fun because I'm usually the one doing it :) Sorry about your box though it sucks when a machine dies, hopefully dell will replace it.

My dads on the phone, they are having him reseat everything, idiots. I can tell you now its a bad mobo or ram, Dell will take weeks to find out.

I have Gateway desktops. They work perfect for me. My Celeron, a Gateway, is 10 years old and works in perfect order! I call it my warrior machine since it survived a brutal summer of hard disk fragmenting.

So an update on my dads Dell, they had him re-seat the RAM, video card, and clock battery. Which seemed to work yesterday. But today the issue is back. I know what Dell is doing, they are avoiding fixing the issue in hopes that little gimmicks will last until the warranty is over, good luck getting a failing system to last for over a year and a half :P

I think it depends on the Dell model. I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 which still runs perfectly. One of my friends has the exact same model and his broke just last year. For one, I think it's how we take care of our computers and second, Dells do suck. That's why I use Fujitsus. My dorm computer is a beaten-up S7010 that's still running strong.

Well I had a Dell and I used it everyday and ad the end of a year and a half the dvd-rw was failing, I had replaced the power cord and the battery, and I used it everyday. I also got 1/3 of the original price out of it. I have a p3 gateway laptop, and although it runs pretty hot (with win98, probably not the best OS), its pretty solid. I think If I was buying a new laptop, it would be a Gateway or Apple. Used, probably a IBM or a Compaq because of the vast selection of used machines

ToddRe:Dell Sucks
Some of the Compaq models are bound to overheat or have parts burn out on the mobo. I had 2 Compaq Armada 3500s that had either a burnt-out CPU or corrupted system memory (on-board, not RAM) and we're not usable. I could use the one with corrupt memory for only a short while until Memtest results showed that one portion of the system memory was not reading and writing properly and thus meant I could only use the laptop for small use like DOS apps and nothing more. Those IBMs are tough as nails though. I have 2 IBM ThinkPads and they work quite well. The only complaint against IBMs are their architectural design. If you take one apart, KNOW how everything fits into place before assembling it back together.
