Brandon | My Dream MachineI'm sure some of you read the topic and were thinking 16 cores,64gb ram, 8tb of hdd. Sorry, thats not me. I want something
IBM Netvista P3 case+mobo+cpu, a new high quality fanless psu, a big heatsink for the cpu so it could run fanless, 512mb ram, any Nvidia video card, a pci working-in-linux wifi card and a 8GB CF with an IDE adapter hdd, all running Ubuntu 8.10 and Syllable, side by side.
also a 22" monitor and new wired (wireless shit sucks) keyboard and mouse, because whats a desktop without connections?
Perhaps I should explain some of that, the heatsink, psu, and cf card, are to remove the moving parts, and therefore noise from the system(also it improves reliability). The video card is because I like my windows wobbly, and nvidia has the best drivers. 512MB RAM is a good amount, and not to expensive. And my grandma gave me an IBM PC 350, the first computer I opened up and messed with Operating Systems and the BIOS on, thats why I chose the IBM base.
Price:
IBM PC: $45
Video Card: $10
PSU: $30
RAM:$5
WIFI:$15
CF+Adapter:$35
Ubuntu OS:$0
System Cost:$140
Monitor: $170
keyboard+mouse: $20
Total Cost: Priceless, or in USD $330 | 2009-01-24 | 1:38 PM |
Todd | Re:My Dream MachineIBM PC for $45?!? Good luck finding one that cheap. IBMs go faster than hot cakes. Even the mobos go for $100 or more for Pentium 3 models!
I agree with you on that wireless deal. Wireless mice eat through batteries and the keyboards aren't as responsive as I'd like. | 2009-01-24 | 6:03 PM |
Brandon | Re:My Dream MachineI love it when you are wrong! Anyways I looked up all the prices, so I know they are good.
IBM Netvista with P3 933($25 buy it now+$20 shipping):http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-6578-RBU-Netvista-Desktop-P3-933MHz-256MB-20GB-HDD_W0QQitemZ220349445844QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item220349445844&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 | 2009-01-24 | 6:19 PM |
Todd | Re:My Dream MachineWow! I kind of thought you'd prove me wrong but I did see people selling IBMs for $100 or more.
But still, it looks decent. Is that the one you're buying? I expected you put down the prices since you researched this out. | 2009-01-25 | 12:56 AM |
Brandon | Re:My Dream MachineI'm not actually buying, I have no money, I have to pay off this Macbook. I was hoping by posting my ideal machine, I might inspire some people to post theres :P. | 2009-01-25 | 9:46 AM |
Todd | Re:My Dream MachineI thought your MacBook was a Christmas gift? You're paying it off? Or did your parents just give you some money towards the MacBook? | 2009-01-25 | 10:49 AM |
Brandon | Re:My Dream MachineWell they gave me $250 minus the price of a gigabit switch, and loaned me the rest for the macbook. Hopefully I can find some shitty employment this summer(I'll be 16 in may) so I can pay off the macbook. I'm relatively sure I won't be getting anything for my birthday, besides maybe I'll be able to talk them into the $20 CF card I need for my thin client. | 2009-01-25 | 11:08 AM |
Todd | Re:My Dream MachineGood luck finding work. I mean that seriously. I don't know about rural NY but in PA, it's tough finding a job when you're 16. I got a job only because my Dad's boss is the mother of one of my friends and asked me if I'd like a job. Other than that, I remember I applied to several places and never heard anything. They were even little jobs like working at Wegmans or any grocery store.
If you have some ideas for PHP software or want to make some software, I can promote it and pay you in full for every copy sold. | 2009-01-25 | 1:33 PM |
Brandon | Re:My Dream MachineHow well does your PHP stuff sell? I mean have you sold any?
I wish my dad would let me run advertisements on my web-site. I could set up free hosting and stuff with ads to get some money.
If anyone wants computer hardware, I have a lot, ranging from a 286 to a Core 2 Duo.
I could probably get a job at McDonalds, and maybe the local grocery store(Although they might want me to shave and get a haircut, I'm still working on looking like the 2 Steve's in my Avatar). | 2009-01-25 | 1:47 PM |
Todd | Re:My Dream MachineI've sold quite a bit. You just have to promote it and have something good and stable. Share-it and sites like HotScripts and Softpedia help with promotions. Share-it helps promote to other sites and have people sell it for you in exchange for commission rates.
For free hosting, you can do it two ways: web hosting (with websites) or file hosting (files and downloads only). Either way, you can make money with ads. You just need a domain. If you want to go through with it, I can help you out and get some hosting software up and running for you. | 2009-01-25 | 2:27 PM |
Brandon | Re:My Dream MachineI would if I thought my dad would let me. Once I'm 18 I'll be able to open one, because everything can be in my name, the problem is right now being 15, I can't have a paypal or adsense account. | 2009-01-25 | 3:21 PM |

Todd | Re:My Dream MachineNow, you're wrong. I had PayPal when I was 15 and I had AdSense when I was 15 too. You have to enter your SSN though for AdSense and you have to have bank account info for PayPal. :P They don't care what your age is. | 2009-01-25 | 4:51 PM |

Good job reading the fine lines there, Todd.
@vsft, yeah I have quite a few, what are you looking for? | 2009-01-25 | 5:57 PM |
Todd | Re:My Dream MachineI got away with it, hence they don't care. | 2009-01-25 | 7:04 PM |
