BrandonSyllable OS
Its not a GUI, but a real OS. I've been experimenting with it for the last couple days, and it seems pretty good, most Ethernet cards work, and some sound. It has very low system requirements, I personally built a Pentium MMX 200Mhz, 128MB RAM(64 isn't really enough), 20GB HDD(I'd like to add MP3s and stuff), and I installed a generic PCI network card and a Sound Blaster 24Bit and I have internet and Sound. It played a mp3 with very high quality on my system. Its web-browser is very nice, and in my opinion beats IE :P, Although in the dev release .6.6, the browser is less nice, I prefer the one from .6.4 or .6.5. There is no wifi support, and no AIM client yet, which are my biggest complaints. But a fairly modern web-browser on 200Mhz isn't bad at all. My next project might be Syllable related.

Sweet downloading it now, I always like different OS's :)

I've seen Syllable before. It looks like a good OS but I wasn't sure at the time. Wifi support is a pretty big problem to me. Maybe they have a roadmap of what they plan to improve for the next release.

I should let you know if you do install don't use Winter or Blue Window themes in .6.5, its a known bug. The LiveCD really gives you a good taste of what its like. I have 2 Desktops with Syllable, my MMX and a Celeron 1.7Ghz rig, which will install Syllable, the MMX doesn't want to, so I just transplant HDDs, I'm currently running .6.6 (Its a Nightly Version), but I'm thinking of going back to .6.5, as the web-browser is better.

That's what I really like about Linux over Windows - ease of swapping HDDs. Windows will flip out if you do that. My DSL HDD works fine in almost any laptop.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
DSL is too limited for me, Have you got it to work with wifi? I GOT SYLLABLE WORKING ON MY THIN CLIENT! Now all I need is a CD card so I can use it perminantly (I'm using a latop hdd now) Syllable isn't Linux btw.

ToddRe:Syllable OS
I didn't get Wifi on DSL. It might also be the hardware because my Wireless card is a Dell brand. I've just been too lazy to buy another kind. Yeah you're right. Syllable isn't Linux. For some reason I was thinking it was but just completely forgot. It reminds me of Linux. Which reminds me, I should get a thin client too. Only problem is internet connections. I'd use it but my school's network is set up so that only Windows and Mac OS get on. Although someone was using Ubuntu and managed to get past.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
What do they do to stop you from using another OS?

ToddRe:Syllable OS
The router (excluding their new wireless router) identifies your MAC address and if your computer is new or changed in anyway, it will shut you out and force you to validate your machine on their "Bradford Security" page which runs a little macro to scan your PC for software. I'd try to hack it to just validate but it's only a valid macro for a certain duration of time. I really hate it but I have no choice.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
Wow, My only idea is set up a repeater of sorts.

ToddRe:Syllable OS
One way is to spoof the MAC address, but sometimes it won't work and kick you and the computer you're spoofing both off. :( Stupid network.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
Just make a virus and spread it around the school. The perfect virus: turns all computers into Ubuntu torrent seeders!

ToddRe:Syllable OS
lol Everyone would know it was me. One thing about college: if you say something to someone, within 24 hours everyone will know about it.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
So don't say anything ;)

ToddRe:Syllable OS
Yeah but there are people who have sought me out to help them with Java homework, people I never knew before.
2009-01-203:29 PM

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
Well, you have no idea what a MAC address is :P (or thats what you tell authorities)

ToddRe:Syllable OS
University Police don't care about anything.
2009-01-205:32 PM

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
The problem is? Is you won't get in trouble why not do it?
2009-01-205:34 PM

ToddRe:Syllable OS
Yeah but the CAs are really bitchy. They complain when people piss them off, but not when you're pissed off by someone else. If I did it to every computer except the CAs' computers, it might not be a big deal. lol
2009-01-205:39 PM

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
No, I mean why not run a Linux or Syllable or any other OS system, if CA doesn't do anything?
2009-01-205:43 PM

ToddRe:Syllable OS
I can run it but I wouldn't get online. Unless there was wireless support. Any good distros support it well? I tried with Ubuntu a long time ago (6.01) and I got it to recognize the wireless card but didn't connect me.
2009-01-206:07 PM

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
Well for wireless, your best bet is Ubuntu or Puppy, they work the best for me.

I am surprised that the campus uses Solaris in some of the newer computer labs. It's funny how most people don't know how to use it.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
Thats one I've never used, how is it?

ToddRe:Syllable OS
It's like any other Linux. It has GNOME as a default desktop and also has CDE as a backup. It has the basic apps and stuff. Nothing to really write home about.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
It's like any other Linux.
Solaris isn't Linux! Its a Unix-like OS though :) Having trouble telling whats Linux and what isn't? :P
2009-01-2111:37 AM

ToddRe:Syllable OS
I assumed since it was GNOME it was Linux. Yes, I need to study my Linux distros list and my Unix distros list. But it's ruled out that it's a *nix OS.

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
Get out of the cave man, Unix like OSes are the future, and they all aren't linux :)
2009-01-212:21 PM

ToddRe:Syllable OS
Speaking of Unix like OSes, ever use Minix?
2009-01-215:16 PM

BrandonRe:Syllable OS
I think I tried it and wasn't impressed
2009-01-216:29 PM

ToddRe:Syllable OS
It's almost like Linux except it does have GUIs and WMs. EDE is one of the primary ones for Minix3.
