Brandon | GUI ContestGUI coders seem to like to work when a contest or prize is involved. So lets brainstorm ideas for contests, and if the 1st one works well, maybe we have one every 3 months?
Some ideas I have:
Best Multiline Input Object
Best Filedialog Object
Best Windowing System
Most Unique desktop/launcher | 2009-01-11 | 12:11 PM |
pharoah | Re:GUI ContestBest scripting system would be a good one. | 2009-01-11 | 9:39 PM |
Todd | Re:GUI ContestWhat about making a look-alike to another GUI? Like Mac OS, older Windows, or a Linux WM? | 2009-01-13 | 8:00 PM |
jasonwoodland | Re:GUI ContestI like that idea, don't forget OS/2 and RISC OS :silly: | 2009-01-13 | 8:13 PM |
pharoah | Re:GUI ContestRisc would be really interesting. Many parts of the GUI function in unique and unconventional ways. | 2009-01-13 | 8:36 PM |
Todd | Re:GUI ContestOr, how about a clone of a QB GUI that doesn't come with source code? | 2009-01-13 | 9:36 PM |
jasonwoodland | Re:GUI ContestCool idea! Pharoah, what do you mean? | 2009-01-13 | 11:29 PM |
pharoah | Re:GUI ContestWell for example Risc doesn't have many dialog boxes. Instead it relies heavily on the pop-up menu system built into the OS. Some settings can actually be changed by a test box in the menu. Also, drag-and drop is highly integrated from what I understand. When you click save, the program you're running gives you an icon that represents the file, which you drag into the file manager to save. I think this is called a GUI pipe, by the way.
Edit:
Might be easier to do a clone of Arthur :). | 2009-01-14 | 6:50 AM |
Todd | Re:GUI ContestStart simple then work your way up. An Arthur clone would be neat! I'd like to give it a shot since it's simple. | 2009-01-14 | 9:32 AM |
| Re:GUI ContestYeah. Arthur had a low-color palette, so it'd work in screen 12 mode. It was also single tasked I think. Not too hard to make, and the apps were upwardly compatible with Risc OS. If you were to create a similar system to arthur, you could them ake a risc clone and use the old apps if you did it right. | 2009-01-14 | 10:27 AM |
Todd | Re:GUI ContestI'd have to study the file headers for that though. | 2009-01-14 | 4:35 PM |
Brandon | Re:GUI ContestI think he meant if you made a GUI like Arthur, you could use code from it in a RISC OS clone. | 2009-01-14 | 7:45 PM |
Todd | Re:GUI ContestOh. *smacks* I thought it was like using the programs from a RISC OS clone and then implementing them around the GUI. :P | 2009-01-15 | 10:54 AM |
pharoah | Re:GUI ContestI kind of meant a bit of both. What you could do is implement a uni-tasking GUI with a scripting language that looked and worked like Arthur. Then you could improve the windowing system and GUI to make it work like Risc OS, and add multi-tasking, but make it compatible with the Arthur clone scripts because the interfaces are similar so the commands could be similar. | 2009-01-15 | 11:00 AM |
