rCXIkon GUI
I stumbled a FreeDOS GUI called Ikon GUI. It has the beginnings of a web-browser. It's not in QB/FB but it looks interesting.

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
Wow! Last time I saw a real GUI for FreeDOS was QubeOS. It was really nice and was made by the same guy who made SEAL. The last GUI I saw for FreeDOS was this little shell of a GUI that just ran as a file manager for FreeDOS. It wasn't great though. I found a FreeDOS mirror with GUIs: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/gui/

rCXRe:Ikon GUI
It seems that it was started this year (2008) and was last updated in October. The forums are quiet and I don't know if the author gave up on it. It's sad to see so many good GUI's die :(

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
Yeah it is. I heard some guys are starting the OzoneGUI project up again.

rCXRe:Ikon GUI
It's called DOSCore. Maybe I should mention this site in their forum.

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
Neat! I'll bookmark that site.

Some of these GUIs look really nice. Good finds!

Re:Ikon GUI
Just to let you know, Ikon is not dead. I'm just taking a nice long break from programming in general. I also wanted to say that it's nice to see people still interested in developing GUI's. Before Ikon I started a QB based GUI and actually finished it, but never released it. I started Ikon after that project back in 2004, mostly to see what I could do with DJGPP. It's nice, but I sure miss the simplicity of basic. Anyway, I still like to see what others are doing once in awhile. It keeps me motivated to continue developing Ikon.

You should release your QB gui. I am sure people would find it interesting here. The strange thing about QB is that it has stood still in many ways. The library capabilities aren't as useful as in other langauges, so people who write things in QB have to learn how to do a lot of things themselves from old code, rather than just using a library everyone builds up their own knowledge. That is why I still find interesting things on internet archives of Fidonet posts.

rCXRe:Ikon GUI
Wow, welcome to the site. I saw that the Wikipedia article about your GUI was deleted. You can add your ikongui to our wiki if you want to.

Re:Ikon GUI
lol, I can't believe the Wikipedia article was deleted because of "Blatant Advertising". I wasn't the one who wrote the article but I sure don't remember it being anything more than a simple list of features. [EDIT] I deleted the features of my QB GUI from this post. I checked the floppy it was on, and apparently I used it to store stuff for Ikon back in the early days of development. Sorry guys, but who knows, maybe I'll find another copy one day. I have over 100 disks to go through. [/EDIT]

JFKRe:Ikon GUI
hey ppl. i am one of the developers of the doscore project. we use ozone and freedos 1.0 as our major distribution to be called Doscore Orion which will have TCP email and web browsing. we are testing atm just no public releases. we are looking for another gui to start another doscore distribution. we were going to use ikon but the license does not allow. i was aware of this site i just never made an account until now.. very cool stuff here.

ikonguiRe:Ikon GUI
I like doscore/ozone, it's one of the best looking GUI's out there. I only wish I could make mine look as nice.

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
The guy who originally made Ozone made SEAL and several different GUIs before and after it. His were pretty plain and boring until QubeOS and Ozone GUI surfaced. So it just takes time and experience. My programs weren't as good then as they are now. Practice makes perfect.

ikonguiRe:Ikon GUI
Too bad Qube isn't available and open source. I think that was my favourite GUI for DOS.

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
I really liked Qube. I'm sure if someone tracked the guy down and sent him a nice e-mail, you might be able to get the source code. That's how I got the code for QBF OS 99, Rush, Blue, and Surena.

JFKRe:Ikon GUI
thanks guys. Micheal Stencil creator of Qube cant actually release the code. so that sux. Interactive studios owns the code and they sunk so not sure... Seal 2 did have ppp but the dude who made the code withdrew it from wat i remember. (wat an egg) when doscore orion (ozone/freedos) is released it will have tcp & networking. and we are working on a new release. another doscore distribution featuring Seal 3.software programs are backwards compatible between ozone and seal 3 now also. (will have screenshots up soon). but we are also looking for another gui to make a distro with so any recommendations?

I found another FreeDOS gui called Nevasca but I can't find the download...

BrandonRe:Ikon GUI
If you look in the forums, you'll see I was involved. The project really never got out of the planning stages.

pharoahRe:Ikon GUI
Wow, that website is amazingly hard to read. Who decided on the blurry picture and the light-grey-on-white text?

BrandonRe:Ikon GUI
Not me! My web-site looks PIMP: http://brandoncornell.com
2009-03-024:43 PM

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
"I'm a PIMP! I'm a PLAYER!" Ever see that documentary, "American Pimp"? lol Still the design looks neat. Brandon, I'd personally steer away from the Times New Roman fonts since Mike Doise of QB71 uses a similar design: http://qb71.com/
2009-03-024:59 PM

BrandonRe:Ikon GUI
I've never seen it, although I do tell my gf that I'm a pimp :P Now, I don't want to make it a habit, but I took Todd's personal advice :P, I changed the font to helvetica, because I saw that its a font supported by Macs and PCs.
2009-03-027:05 PM

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
lol I'm surprised Macs don't have Times New Roman. Isn't it like Lucida or something for the default font? Anyway, it does look cool. It would be funny if you put up a pic of yourself dressed as a pimp. lol
2009-03-0210:34 PM

BrandonRe:Ikon GUI
Macs have Times New Roman. I am a pimp, I don't have to dress up :P
2009-03-032:19 PM

ToddRe:Ikon GUI
lol "Why a ho need a pimp?" That was in the documentary American Pimp.
2009-03-032:25 PM

pharoahRe:Ikon GUI
Yeah times new roman isn't the best for web pages. I really like Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, but I don't think it comes installed by default with all machines. Just as long as it's not comic sans :).
2009-03-033:35 PM

BrandonRe:Ikon GUI
I looked yesterday, and there is like 7 fonts on all macs and pcs, they are pretty crappy.
