BrandonMy Next GUI
I am not 100% sure were my next GUI will be going. Basically there are 3 options: 1. Fun500 Klinger, start with 4 and add on, but I feel like 'm stretching an old shoe to make it fit. 2. Fun500 Radar, whole new codebase, brand new shoes with space to grow. 3. Work with Murray on a GUI. Most likely it will be 2 or 3 or a combination of the two.

ToddRe:My Next GUI
I agree. #1 is somewhat like what Mircosoft did with Windows ME: take Windows 98 and make it hell! lol What's in Radar BTW?

BrandonRe:My Next GUI
Nothing yet! But It will be much more a powerful scripter which is BASIC Like.

BrandonCodename Pink
Remember in the 2 BETAs when I used colors for codenames? lol Well I'm not giving much away about Codename Pink, besides the fact that you all will be surprised and I will get my top 2 finish in the GUI Awards!

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
I made progress today, The last couple days I've been fighting to get a decent working environment. I've decided on SVGA and FreeBASIC. Other than that I'm not gonna tell much, what would you like to see a GUI do?

agumaRe:Codename Pink
get your homework from your backback and do it for you. lol jk maybe a reminder system (the one that I couldn't get to work)?
2008-10-096:04 PM

ToddRe:Codename Pink
Anti-aliasing?
2008-10-096:41 PM

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
WTF is that? (I know its something to make fonts look good.) But how do I implement it?
2008-10-096:45 PM

Re:Codename Pink
I have NO idea! It's basically to smooth out all the rough edges in stuff.
2008-10-096:50 PM

ToddRe:Codename Pink
Yeah, you usually can achieve it in 32-bit mode. I remember reading about it in FB's docs.
2008-10-097:04 PM

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
LOL, in DOS you can only get 16bit to work. Well on true hardware, I have only been able to get 16 or less, maybe the code for 24/32 its the same in fb, has a bug?
2008-10-097:19 PM

ToddRe:Codename Pink
Well it's probably Allegro. Allegro says it's capable of 32-bit but like you said I never got it to work. It just shows a blank screen. Again it might be that the PC doesn't support a VESA mode in 32-bit.
2008-10-097:28 PM

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
Do you know how many DOS PCs I have?
2008-10-097:31 PM

ToddRe:Codename Pink
Do you know how many of them support 32-bit VESA mode?
2008-10-097:46 PM

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
dunno, fb 32bit won't run on any of them.
2008-10-097:49 PM

ToddRe:Codename Pink
Yeah so my guess is that 32-bit VESA isn't supported. 16-bit VESA is still good and it depends on how far you can push it. Some of my computers won't go past 800x600 in VESA so I'd put in a screen mode setting that can be changed by the user.
2008-10-097:52 PM

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
I know, most DOS machines are good at 800x600, but past that they struggle.
2008-10-097:58 PM

agumaRe:Codename Pink
isn't 640x480x8 ok enough for you guys!? lol
2008-10-098:51 PM

BrandonRe:Codename Pink
No, hi res, or no res.

jasonwoodlandRe:My Next GUI
Mine is oversized for the screen size, lol, 1152x864x32. Anything under 640x480x4I wouldn't like to use. ;)
2008-10-1012:27 AM

BrandonRe:My Next GUI
Thats not a real resolution!
2008-10-1011:38 AM

ToddRe:My Next GUI
Oh yes it is! My roommate has a 15" monitor that is extremely wide so in order to compensate for such a large width and small height, it uses a resolution similar to the dimensions Jason uses.

ksrRe:My Next GUI
Hey, I used to use 1152x864 when I had a CRT. Now I use an integrated TV/LCD at a resolution of 1280x960. The native resolution of the display is 1440x900, but the stupid thing just says "Out of range" when I try that.
2008-10-101:07 PM

BrandonRe:My Next GUI
Todd, 1152x864 would be a 4:3 resolution, not for a wide screen. I just hadn't seen it before, its not a common one.
2008-10-101:37 PM

ToddRe:My Next GUI
His monitor isn't ultra-wide but it is pretty wide. I just measured it and it's roughly 10" wide and 6" high. So 10:6 would actually be 5:3. It isn't really common I agree but I haven't seen Jason's monitor. Personally I never got any of my CRTs to go past 1024x768 except for one that had a very high resolution of 1280x1024 but I couldn't see text when it was set to that.
2008-10-102:15 PM

BrandonRe:My Next GUI
My Athlon uses a 17inch CRT at 1280x1024 just fine. Its a newish CRT tho.
2008-10-103:53 PM

agumaRe:My Next GUI
Actually I'm using 1280x800 :P But I mean for GUIs that we make, that always seems to be enough.
2008-10-106:04 PM

ToddRe:My Next GUI
One thing you have to realize aguma is that people like things that you can set to your preference. If KDE didn't put in themes along with look and feel settings, it wouldn't be very popular for being customizable.
2008-10-106:13 PM

agumaRe:My Next GUI
I mean as a default resolution
2008-10-106:30 PM

ToddRe:My Next GUI
Well it's Brandon's decision to do so. ;)
2008-10-106:36 PM

BrandonRe:My Next GUI
Huh? I always let the user customize the look, did you try Fun500 GUI 4?
2008-10-106:37 PM

ToddRe:My Next GUI
Yeah I know it's a setting. I just told aguma why GUIs should be customizable.
2008-10-106:49 PM

BrandonRe:My Next GUI
Because you said so?
2008-10-106:57 PM

ToddRe:My Next GUI
Just a general rule-of-thumb for any programmer.
