BrandonPerfect GUI PC
So want a GUI PC? But want something reliable and cheap? Ever heard of a thin client? They are small computers with low power processors, and flash memory, meaning less heat, and no noise, best part is they are fairly speedy for a GUI. I orginaly bought mine for linux, but its won't boot it, the BIOS is wacky. So I installed FreeDOS! I can run Fun500 right on it! So for about $20, I got a working, silent, PC perfect for GUIs! Mine is a Maxspeed Maxterm 5140, with a 300MHz CPU, 32MB CF Card (you can get bigger ones at just about any store, they are used in cameras). If you want one heres the link to ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/MaxSpeed-Maxterm-5140-Thin-Client-Terminal-w-modem-NIB_W0QQitemZ110277719498QQihZ001QQcategoryZ1486QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I also would like to ask for some help from rCX or any other ASM guy, I need help compiling the DOS Packet Driver here: http://www.national.com/appinfo/networks/files/macphyter_packet_driver.zip

I've heard of those Thin Clients. For $20, it's pretty decent. They are mainly used for connecting to workstations or making little computer kiosks. But the one problem is getting data on there. No CD-ROM or floppy drive. :-( Still it would be awesome if there's a GUI that runs very fast on there and performs well.

Its faster than a Pentium 100 and slower than a 166, but closer to the 166. Getting data on it is easy as hell, use a CF reader to install FreeDOS and USB mass storage drivers, then use a flash drive, external hard drive, external cd-rom or what ever later on. Thats what I do.

Yeah that's definitely one way to do it. I don't have all of the above so I'd be stuck unless I got a card reader.

They are cheap, maybe $10. Another option I just thought of is the adapter built into the machine uses a laptop ide cable! So you could use a laptop hard drive with it (I used a 30GB one time). But then it would make noie and there realy isn't space in the case. If you have a laptop like my Compaq that uses a cable to plug into the hard drive you might be able to just plug the CF adapter into the cable and use the floppy or cd drives on the laptop then reinstall the adapter? Its really a nice little unit, they are runnin out (Todd I know you have money$$, buy one to take with you to college, you can use it to test and shit). For $21, a reliable DOS PC for a GUI coder thats a good deal. (I'm still using the 32MB CF card it came with, Its working and I only use it for GUIs that take up no space, and I have a 40gb external HDD I can use)

I have money but I can't buy it. I will be in a small room with two other people. I got enough stuff that'll take up room. But thanks anyway. I'll definitely think about buying one.
