BrandonThe Future
I am a 2nd year Computer Engineering student, so that means two things academically: 1. I take lots of Electrical Engineering courses, and 2. I take programming courses. As you can imagine, someone who has written as many GUIs and websites as I have is bored in the programming classes.

This weekend I spent a total of 24 hours writing a project that is large and complex enough to challenge me, and after accidentally deleting a post on this site, I figured I better explain.

The "Blog 2.0" has been a phrase that I've said at least a half dozen times. No one would call this version of the blog perfect, and although it has a lot of features, it has a lot of flaws in the way that it actually works and in what it will allow the user to do.In case you didn't figure it out, I've started work on a new "CMS" for the blog. I'm not going to list off new securities or features and ruin the surprise, but I will say this: It's going to be MUCH nicer. It does come at a cost; the database format is completely different so the content of this site will have to be manually copied over, that will also help us trim off dead projects, etc. that we don't need anymore.

The timeline is something that we all should be skeptical about, and I can't answer when things will go live, I'd say that I'm about half way done with the site, so I wouldn't expect the new site done until sometime in December.

If you actually read all that, you probably deserve some sort of hint as to what the future holds:

Our new banner.

and after accidentally deleting a post on this site, I figured I better explain. So, you don't do backups? No one would call this version of the blog perfect, and although it has a lot of features, it has a lot of flaws in the way that it actually works and in what it will allow the user to do. It's actually quite good, but it has a lot of bugs and annoyances that were never fixed. It does come at a cost; the database format is completely different so the content of this site will have to be manually copied over This would be a valid excuse if you were attempting to extract data from an obscure 20-year-old database format, but you created both systems, so I don't understand why it's such a problem. Our new banner. I still prefer the first banner with the color gradient background, but whatever.

BrandonRe:The Future
You are correct, I do not backup the database, 1and1 does however. And I'll agree that the real issue is little bugs, but they add up and for me it was easier to start over than to try and patch up the mess that is the CMS I wrote. Again, you are right that I could move the data over no problem, but the layout of the new site is very different and I'm not sure how exactly I'd move the information. As far as the banner, that preview is half sized, I think it looks a lot better full size. Thanks for the feedback.

This is pretty cool, I thought for sure that you've moved on. I reckon if you gave me the two database formats I could write a converter up. And the logo, it's better than the current one as I hate sans serif, ugly bitch, but I will totally make a few logos. You should have it so a different logo is loaded on each page, like the AMP (Amiga Music Preservation) website.

I like the initiative. This website has a number of technical flaws, and hopefully you'll learn a lot of interesting stuff by rewriting it. I like the logo, too, although it's rather blurry at that size. Might I suggest the use of markdown (rather than HTML) for the comments on the new blog? Markdown's fairly popular (Reddit and StackOverflow use it), and it's simple to write. Plus, you'd get rid of all this input sanitizing stuff that's always been such a mess, and it would be easy to convert the comments to different formats (like RSS).

I'm using bbcode, I found a nice simple function that took no time to implement.

I always thought BBcode was a bit ugly, and its tags require more typing, but it's certainly better than HTML.

DickRe:The Future
don't if it's worth it seeing so little work done on actual dos programs / guis in the past few years

BrandonRe:The Future
That's a very good point, and it's why I'm looking at this as more of a programming project (writing a forum/blog/CMS) than a rewrite of this site. And even at that it'll be a long time before anything actually is changed, as I have little time/motivation to work on the rewrite.I did make a lot of progress this last weekend overcoming the fist hurdle: actually getting started.

DickRe:The Future
Had a bizarre dream today, very vivid. I dreamt I came into this blog and it looked very different, very modern and complex. I remember there was a bunch of 'Brandon Cornell' advertising all over the place and it took a while to find the GUIs. I eventually found them and noticed I had written an assload of random GUIs 'Dick\'s GUI' '9OSGUI' 'Dick's 9GUI' '9OSsdfsd' random stuff like that. They all looked strange with weird fonts and features. I also imagined I had like 10 random cell phones laying around and was trying to install the GUIs on them... Anyways, don't know why I'm posting this, but all 100% real from a very vivid dream.
