I am rethinking the architecture of Cyclops and i would like some input please. First off, i was wondering if anyone knows where to find a list of application types that are considered "essential" in a GUI system. I had a much further progressed version of Cyclops ready to upload, but due to the unfortunate circumstances of a harddrive crash, was unable to upload them in time. I am trying ti figure out what this gui needs. Also, i am working on a multi windowed system.

Well, the two most important (and unappreciated applications) are the file manager and text editor.

I had a file manager in the process of being made and it got lost with the newest version of cyclops. I found some restoration software online, and got it back, but forgot to save it and accidentally wiped it out again. As for the text editor, i have to write a routine for multi line text bixes with mouse controlled cursor placement and it will be easy to make.

There was a little poll a (long) while ago about this on the blog archive. I guess not many people know about the archive, but it's a good community resource because a lot of issues were discussed there back in the day. I seem to remember a list of essential GUI apps somewhere as well, but I can't think where that is. In general, Brandon's correct in that you need a file manager and text editor to be useful at all. I'd like to see a nice command line shell and an image viewer/editor (if you can't make a decent paint program, a viewer would be better than a bad one). Maybe one of these days it would be nice to go through a bunch of GUIs and make a big table about which apps they have. Could be interesting.

I always found the guidebook gallery as a useful source of inspiration. A calculator (with keyboard entry!) is another good app to have.
