Brandon | New Linux Distro?I started on the new blog, so over time I'll work on it, maybe by summer it'll be done :P I don't want to set any timelines. Anyhow, I'm really thinking about building my own linux distro, I've always wanted to, and I think I finally have an understanding of linux that is enough that I could do it.My plans would be:
Apps built in: Dillo2,GIMP2,Pidgin,XFCE4.8,Conky,Ace of Pengiuns,e-mail client? :P, abiword +gnumeric, vlc, hardinfo
just that and the command line
in the repo there will be firefox and openoffice, however they won't be in the stock download because firefox is updated to often, and open office is too big

Todd | Re:New Linux Distro? What kind of WM/desktop are you going to put in?
Also, why not put in another browser beside Dillo? I like Dillo but it's butchers pages that use CSS3 or tons of JavaScript. Maybe something with Webkit or Gecko? | 2011-01-26 | 7:59 PM |
Brandon | Re:New Linux Distro? To quote myself "XFCE4.8"-I really think XFCE deserves more recognition, and from what I've heard about 4.8 it's fixed many of my complaints, and I think building a distro around XFCE kind of shows exactly what I want, a distro that is functional and light. And Firefox+other browsers are updated very often so I don't think it's worth including them, I'll include Dillo2 for basic usage/offline usage and then once you are on-line you can install the latest version of your browser of choice. | 2011-01-26 | 9:17 PM |
Dick | Re:New Linux Distro?I like distros where you install & configure all the software you need yourself. But swap vlc with mplayer, and for email client sylpheed is pretty good. | 2011-01-26 | 9:50 PM |
Brandon | Re:New Linux Distro?I've used Sylpheed before, I'd definately look into it. However VLC has a larger recognition, and I prefer it over MPlayer. BUT, I will look at different options because I have the size of an installed system to be approx 200MB. What you just asked for is TinyCore :P Anyways I plan to make it so that almost(or all) everything can be removed/replaced through the package manager. My system will likely NOT be live CD and it will install the traditional way (unlike tinycore). | 2011-01-27 | 10:43 AM |
