ksr | Install Windows 2000 from USBI need to install Windows 2000 (don't ask) to a computer which can only boot from USB. I have an ISO of the install disc. Any thoughts? | 2010-11-10 | 4:17 AM |
Todd | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBTry Novicorp WinToFlash. Worked for me a few times before. | 2010-11-10 | 7:43 AM |
Brandon | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBI have an external USB optical drive, it's really handy. | 2010-11-10 | 10:42 AM |
ksr | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBI had heard about that Todd, but it seems it only works with XP and greater. I didn't want to put XP on because it's only a 500MHz 256MB machine (it's my old tablet), but it seems I might have to. Linux is unfortunately out of the question as there are no drivers for the touch screen or the wifi card. | 2010-11-11 | 2:31 AM |
ksr | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBIn the end I put the tablet's hard drive in another laptop and installed 2000 that way. The problem now is that when I put the hard drive back in the tablet, it hangs at "Starting Windows...". The difference in hardware is obviously throwing it, but with no way of installing directly to the tablet, I'm a bit stuck. | 2010-11-12 | 1:52 PM |
Todd | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBI've tried that before and yes Windows has a stupid activation requirement where no more than 5 types of hardware can be changed, so Windows cannot be swapped.
I would suggest either getting an external CD drive and using that or find some way of writing an ISO to a thumb drive. Did WinToFlash work at all? I know it works for XP but did you try it with Windows 2000? | 2010-11-12 | 1:56 PM |
ksr | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBWinToFlash doesn't support 2000, and it didn't work with XP when I tried it (it didn't seem to make the USB drive bootable). I've managed to get the tablet to boot Windows 98 and I'm trying to do an in situ upgrade to 2000. | 2010-11-13 | 11:40 AM |
ksr | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBFinally got Windows 2000 installed. The touch screen doesn't work though, so I'm going to design a keyboard-only gui for it. | 2010-11-14 | 9:59 AM |
Todd | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBWhy not just download drivers for the touch screen? | 2010-11-14 | 10:09 AM |
ksr | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBbecause
The touch screen doesn't work though | 2010-11-14 | 11:47 AM |
Brandon | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBSo the touch screen only has Win98 Drivers? | 2010-11-14 | 11:54 AM |
ksr | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBIt only has Windows 2000 drivers, but I installed them and
The touch screen doesn't work (I get a STOP error on boot, to be more precise).
Is there an echo in here? | 2010-11-14 | 1:26 PM |
Brandon | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBYep, it's an effect of the dark grey and black color scheme. | 2010-11-14 | 1:44 PM |
Todd | Re:Install Windows 2000 from USBWhen you said it doesn't work, I assume you meant it doesn't work BECAUSE Windows 2000 typically doesn't come prepackaged with touchscreen drivers. I'd be a little more explicit... :-P
