HorvatM | Announcing SpacecatImagine a computer that lets you work.
Imagine a computer that lets you concentrate on your work.
Imagine a computer that remembers where you left off and adapts to you.
Imagine a computer that does all the information housekeeping for you.
Imagine a computer that doesn't make you care about how it works.
Imagine a computer that automatically backs up your work and helps you when you make a mistake.
Imagine a computer that lets you effortlessly find your work and piece it together.
Imagine a computer that lets you communicate any information in any way with anyone.
Imagine a computer that lets you do all that quickly, efficiently, and ergonomically.
Imagine Spacecat.
The truth is, computers have been capable of all that for years. It's just that everybody followed the same old way of thinking.
Spacecat is coming winter 2010.

Brandon | Re:Announcing SpacecatI'm assuming that you know that your screenshot is of a TUI and not a GUI. | 2010-10-10 | 2:18 PM |
HorvatM | Re:Announcing SpacecatThat's a technical detail. Are you implying it does not belong here? Or you simply don't want competition? A true GUI relies primarily on graphics for its user interface, and all of the GUIs I've seen on this site primarily use text to get the point across, so technically they are also TUIs. | 2010-10-10 | 2:58 PM |
Brandon | Re:Announcing SpacecatWell technically the only real rule for GUI awards is that the UI is made in BASIC and complied for DOS, so it can be entered in GUI Awards, how judges react is upto them. And as far as being hosted on the site, if it can enter GUI Awards, then it obviously can be hosted. | 2010-10-10 | 3:21 PM |

HorvatM | Re:Announcing SpacecatMac OS X still follows the old ideas from the 1970s, both above and under the hood. It also imposes a specific way of working onto its users. | 2010-10-12 | 10:39 AM |
Dick | Re:Announcing SpacecatLooks good. You're going to have to make up for the small screen size and lack of graphics with speed and functionality. Good luck. And remember, you have 8 pages of screen memory which will be very useful for a TUI. | 2010-10-12 | 1:57 PM |

Todd | Re:Announcing SpacecatGive us a run-down on what makes it amazing. So far it does sound like things computers can do already. | 2010-11-01 | 3:25 PM |
HorvatM | Re:Announcing SpacecatOf course computers can do that already. The question is how they do it.
Spacecat is completely user- and data-centered. This is not an attempt to make computers somehow easier to use; it is an attempt to make them more functional, useful, and helpful, to the individual intellectual.
I won't give away any details, but it will take a very different approach to the user interface and inner workings of the system. | 2010-11-01 | 5:24 PM |
Jason | Re:Announcing Spacecatmaybe an 'increase in productivity' would be what youre lookin for | 2010-11-01 | 8:55 PM |
Todd | Re:Announcing SpacecatLike I said, I'm just looking for an example of what makes it different from other GUIs. I think you should pursue it but it seems a little vague to me. | 2010-11-02 | 12:35 AM |
ksr | Re:Announcing SpacecatStop being intentionally vague. If your screenshot is anything to go by, your idea is not revolutionary. I mean a stacking window manager - really? You think that is the most efficient and productive way of using a computer? | 2010-11-03 | 11:02 AM |
trolly | Re:Announcing Spacecatfull screen apps are more productive... | 2010-11-03 | 3:02 PM |
HorvatM | Re:Announcing Spacecat[quoting Todd] I'm just looking for an example of what makes it different from other GUIs.
To begin, it's not an imitation of any existing GUI. It is a serious project that I've been working on for more than two years.
[quoting ksr] Stop being intentionally vague.
To quote myself, I won't give away any details. At least not until it's ready enough. I'm not going to hype it too much because then it will be just another QB GUI with far too many ambitions. I'm trying to stay realistic, so I don't make any promises.
[quoting ksr] I mean a stacking window manager - really? You think that is the most efficient and productive way of using a computer?
[quoting trolly] full screen apps are more productive...
Sometimes one, sometimes the other. User-centered does not mean that it forces you to use a certain style. The workspace manager is pretty basic at the moment but I'm researching ways to make everything more intelligent.
Brandon: this forum badly needs a quote feature. Or at least a way to see the previous few posts when you're replying so you can quote them by copying text. Seriously; I typed this post in Notepad. | 2010-11-03 | 4:20 PM |
