Jason | do you know what really grinds my gears?nothing happening so im going to start a thread. i really hate how every mac user i know hates their mac being touched, i can use their windows computer and they dont give a shit, but their macs seem to be so fragile, so they upgrade to what they want & think, a fragile computer. I dont mean when i want to use it i use it for shotput, just some simple file copy routines. do you know anyone like this or is just my misfortune? | 2010-08-05 | 3:47 AM |
HorvatM | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears? It's probably just your misfortune. Macs do seem fragile though. The two MacBooks owned by two members of our family have had various repairs rather frequently. Whether this is due to the hardware or the owners is unknown to me, but the fact remains that my PC has only had 1 upgrade in 3 years. Of course the Macs that I own have practically never had any problems which weren't present before they got into my hands.
EDIT: 100th post. | 2010-08-05 | 5:13 AM |
Jason | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?congrats on 100th
i dont know what they think though, am i sasquatch, or is the mac made of paper mache? lol | 2010-08-05 | 6:49 AM |
Brandon | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?I ran a Macbook for a year to see what OS X and apple was like, the hardware was far from weak. It was a solidly made machine, it did have one quirk where video would distort but it was rare (maybe ones a month) and a reboot fixed it. I also have an iMac G3 which I bought on ebay, it runs like brand new, however wither in shipping or when the last owner had it, the case got all broken up, but it still is held together well enough. I also have a couple older powermacs, they both run file, not weak or anything, they are weirdly designed, not like a PC in most anyway, which makes getting parts and repairing them hard.
I'll admit that there is an "apple tax", however if you buy the right item at the right time, you can get a fair price (usually when the item is just released) but Macs are more expensive to begin with (they are expensive because they don't use cheap shit like Celerons) so the market for used parts has higher prices. For example my ASUS EEE 701 keyboard was like $20 to replace (myself) where as if I wanted to replace the keyboard on my macbook it would have been a couple hundred dollars (the keyboard was built into the laptop, so it would be replacing more than just the keyboard).
So Jason, probably the reason your friends are like that is because PCs are a dime a dozen, there is a huge selection of cheap parts, where as with Macs, Apple makes everything and the prices aren't quite the same. | 2010-08-05 | 8:29 AM |
Jason | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?well software wise, people think that trying to copy files from a scratched disc will wreck it :@ | 2010-08-05 | 8:57 AM |
HorvatM | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears? If it's a REALLY damaged disc it might actually get blown to pieces. That happened to me a couple of times on a PC. Not fun.
Plus, the trayless SuperDrives in recent Macs don't accept Mini CDs, so who knows what other anomalies they might have. | 2010-08-05 | 12:14 PM |
Brandon | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?Cost of a DVD Burner Standard size, tray loading: $20, cost of a slim slot load DVD burner: $45 that's just for the part, I'd hate to have to try and replace an optical drive in a Mac, they really want you to pay to have them serviced by them. I'd bet having an optical drive replaced on a Mac is about $100 retail. On a PC, any idiot can undo 4 screws and 2 cables and then reconnect (I'd know I had a loac boy replace his drive once :P) | 2010-08-05 | 3:17 PM |
JFK | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?beh you know what grinds my gears???
mac vs windows vs linux wars.
i am a user of all three systems and the all have their uses and advantages and cons.
i like mac its stable and has many multi, media based p[programs that work great
Linux, i like linux because it offers you full control over your PC with stability and still has a nerdy element to it.
Windows, well it offers the widest range of software support but also is for the mainstream user. the thing i hate about windows is it tries to tell you how to use your computer.
like i said pros and the cons | 2010-08-06 | 7:09 AM |

Agreed.
But we weren't criticizing anything, we were just discussing. | 2010-08-06 | 7:29 AM |
Jason | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?JFK has very good points, i dont use a mac... yet, but i've sort of merged to windows + msdos, i've done the switch between windows and ubuntu\kubuntu\chakra but i've decided that windows does all i need it to and already supports textmode dos boxes. dos because of it's speed against ntvdm (i know fullscreen) but true dos just works better with me | 2010-08-06 | 7:35 AM |
JFK | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?lol i know you weren't criticizing i was just stating what grinds my gears :) | 2010-08-06 | 11:51 PM |
Todd | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?I agree. Windows vs. Mac vs. Linux wars aren't very productive. I say as long as your OS does what you want, just leave well enough alone. It's like arguing over cats and dogs as which is a better pet. People like what appeals to them and you can't convert everyone to one side, no matter how hard you try. | 2010-08-07 | 5:42 PM |
JFK | Re:do you know what really grinds my gears?NO Todd, its obvious that dogs are better than cays!! DUH!!! everyone knows that!!!
lol
No but you are right.
i think Mac and Linux have come along way in the past 5-10 years.
Windows has a large compatibility factor thats all. i have even had guys at the PC Store tell me that Mac and Linux is inferior. Pfft.
Mac - Multimedia, Stability, Security & Internet is a huge advantage
Linux - Stability, Games (Wine and Native), Internet and Hosting.
Windows - Gaming, Multimedia, Office/Corporate Uses...
