TheWalrus | Still working on CostaVersion 0.9.9 will mostly be an optimized version of 0.9.8, with a few features added. I noticed that each source file grew about a lot when compiled into an EXE, which meant that since all of Costas accessories where compiled seperately there was a lot of space to be saved by compiling to a single EXE. This would also mean faster execution. The only downfall would be the increased memory usage - or so I thought. By heavily optimizing the code I managed to squeeze all accesories into an EXE file less than 150 KB in size. The desktop alone from 0.9.8 was 105 KB, so that's saving almost 400 KB.
I have to admit the code from 0.9.8 wasn't very streamlined, but still: A desktop, a file association editor, a theme selector, a dialog with various settings, a dialog to customize desktop links, a calculator and Tic Tac Toe, all with a graphical user interface with both mouse and keyboard support, in 150 KB. That's pretty decent if you ask me.
I've also replaced COSTA.EXE (the part that stays in memory while running an external program, and launches the desktop again when the external program ends) with a batch program. This reduces the memory usage when running external programs by about 50 KB RAM, while providing the exact same functionality. Once I'm done fixing and optimizing things I'll focus on adding more features, specifically some more accessories.
I know I don't post here to often, but don't be fooled - I am working on Costa from time to time :-)
(Brandon: When I post using Internet Explor 8, none of the line wraps I make work. I have to edit my post afterwards and add line wraps again.) | 2010-05-03 | 6:24 PM |
Brandon | Re:Still working on CostaThe posting system is HTML mode. Then the edit function is more graphical.
It's nice to hear that Costa is still being worked on, but I think Fun500 6 will give it a run for it's money. | 2010-05-03 | 6:48 PM |
TheWalrus | Re:Still working on CostaWell, it's not a competition - not for me anyway, I'm just making Costa because I enjoy doing so. How it compares to other GUIs doesn't really matter to me, as long as I'm satisfied with my own work.
But speaking of Fun500, it's good to see that it progressing so well. I like those icons at the bottom of the screen, the black/white theme is very stylish. If I had to put my finger on something it would be the calculator. The buttons are so small and placed so closely together that I'm having a hard time clicking them. Besides that it's shaping up nicely, so keep up! | 2010-05-03 | 7:13 PM |
Brandon | Re:Still working on CostaI think I've heard that about every version of Calc ever made :P But in this version (6 I believe it is), you can use the numpad which I personally believe is better than using a mouse and buttons anyways. | 2010-05-04 | 6:49 AM |
TheWalrus | Re:Still working on CostaYeah, if you have a numpad ;) | 2010-05-04 | 11:49 AM |
Brandon | Re:Still working on CostaI think I'm going to make 100x100 buttons in my next calc version :P | 2010-05-04 | 1:35 PM |
