You mess around with the tutorials and programs' code and see what it does. Be sure to refer to the help and documentation of the language so you can learn how functions and procedures work. For maximum effectiveness, try an easily understood language like BASIC, Pascal, or Delphi. Then work your way up through the languages like Java, C++, PHP, until you feel confident in programming.
