BrandonAncient Computers in use Today
I recently read this interesting article about old machines that are still being used for real work today, and thought that it would be enjoyed here: PC World

I love reading stuff like this. If I still had a 486 laying around, I'd honestly probably still use it for writing my GUI on instead of the P4 I'm using, lol!

I'm kind of on the fence about this. I mean for one, if it works and there are no problems, go with it. But on the flip side of things, what happens when the machine breaks and no one can repair it? Or what if a part breaks and they're not manufactured anymore? On one hand, it's neat to know that people still get use out of these old machines but on the other hand, I feel like you're setting yourself up for failure. Reminds me of all the businesses trying to find COBOL programmers to maintain their outdated systems. Plus I think for companies with a lot of information flow, looking up information in a database may take some time with an older processor. I don't know - I just have mixed feelings about this.

Well I don't see why a company would upgrade their systems if they are working? Sure the old systems will break, but when they do that's the time to update. The fact that they haven't had to upgrade yet is a testament to how solid their old systems are.
