Brandon | One month with the new BlogSo the new blog has been up for a whole month now. It's been pretty smooth, but I thought I'd note what hiccups we've overcame.
Originally guests could post, but I was getting multiple spam messages a day. This was fixed by allowing only registered users to post.
Similarly I had to add a capita to the registration to stop spam user registrations.
It was determined that youtube videos couldn't be embedded in news posts by users, a plug-in was installed so all youtube URLs are automatically embedded.
User's couldn't edit their own comments, a plug-in was installed to allow for editing for 30 minutes.
Also, a few columns have been started over the last month:
GUI of the Week, is a weekly post where one GUI is selected and a download link & screenshot are posted with a small note about the GUI.
Time Machine, is a regular post where I findĀ remnantsĀ from the past and repost them.
Found on ebay, is a new section where I (or other authors) can post neat things that they find on ebay.
I have a few notes about the new site that I think I should mention:
New users are made "authors" by default so that they can post news, however if they abuse this I reserve the right to demote them and force activation on their postings.
Once a user's first comment is activated by a moderator, they can freely comment without activation.
I'd love to have more regular columns, if you have an idea don't hesitate to ask about it or to try it.
For me anyway, this new blog format for the Blog seems to be working pretty well. Sure, we lost the project based system of the old site, but using tags allows things to be grouped very easily and this new format, in my opinion, is much better suited for the limited amount of content that the BASIC GUI community outputs. | 2013-03-16 | 4:00 PM |
TheWalrus | Re: One month with the new BlogGood work with the new blog Brandon, it's nice to see that you're still doing your best to keep the community alive.
A small suggestion: How about showing the number of comments a post has next to it? That way it would be easier to see if any new comments have been posted since the last time the site was visited. | 2013-03-22 | 9:55 AM |
Brandon | Re: One month with the new BlogThe comment count is shown, after there is a comment the "Leave a comment" text goes away and the number of comments is displayed. Also, at the bottom of the homepage the latest comments are displayed | 2013-03-24 | 4:02 PM |
